The best AI tools for turning long videos into short clips
AI clippers find the best moments in a long recording, reframe them to vertical and caption them. Here is how the three we score compare.
Best overall: OpusClip (74/100). Purpose-built for turning podcasts, interviews and talks into captioned vertical shorts. Try OpusClip (affiliate link)
The three are only 2 points apart on preliminary scores. Run one of your own videos through two of them before you commit.
One long video can feed a week of short-form posts, if you have time to find the moments and cut them. AI clipping tools do most of that work: they transcribe the recording, look for self-contained moments, reframe to 9:16, add captions and give you a stack of clips to review. Below we compare the three clippers we score. The scores come from our Image & video ranking, which rates every tool on the same 0–100 scale.

A note on the scores
Our Image & video ranking is built around a general task (a thumbnail with legible text plus a 5-second product clip), so it rewards generators like Runway and Kling AI. Clippers score lower on "fit" there because they don't generate footage. Within this guide we only compare tools that do the clipping job. Here is how they break down:
| Factor (weight) | OpusClip | Descript | Vizard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fit for the use case (30) | 60 | 62 | 58 |
| Output quality (25) | 80 | 80 | 76 |
| Ease / time-to-value (15) | 85 | 75 | 85 |
| Value / pricing (15) | 82 | 80 | 85 |
| Momentum (10) | 75 | 70 | 68 |
| Trust / maturity (5) | 75 | 88 | 70 |
| Total | 74 | 73 | 72 |
What you pay per minute of video
All three meter by how much video you upload, so the useful comparison is cost per source minute on the plan you'd actually buy.
| Plan | Price | Included | ≈ per source minute |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpusClip Starter | $15/mo (monthly only) | 150 credits/mo (1 credit = 1 min) | $0.10 |
| OpusClip Pro, yearly | $14.50/mo billed yearly | 300 credits/mo | $0.05 |
| Vizard Creator, yearly | $174/yr | 7,200 credits/yr (1 credit = 1 min) | $0.02 |
| Descript Hobbyist, yearly | $16/mo billed yearly | 10 media hours/mo + 400 AI credits | ≈$0.03* |
Our arithmetic from list prices checked Oct 20, 2026. *Descript's media hours cover all media you import or record, not just clipping, and AI features also draw on AI credits, so it isn't a like-for-like number.
Who each tool is for
1. OpusClip
OpusClip does one thing: it takes a long video, finds the moments most likely to work as shorts, and turns them into vertical clips. It reframes the speaker automatically, adds animated captions, gives each clip a Virality Score so you can sort the output, and can post straight to social platforms. It has web, iOS and Android apps and an API.
Who it's for: podcasters, interviewers, coaches and anyone recording talks or webinars who wants a batch of shorts every week with minimal editing. Who it's not for: people who need to generate footage from scratch (it only cuts what you give it), or creators making highly visual videos with little talking. It works best on spoken-word content.
Watch out for: reviewers recommend expecting to discard or edit some clips; treat the Virality Score as a sorting aid, not a guarantee. The free plan's clips are watermarked, and the Starter plan is monthly only.
Try OpusClip ↗Affiliate link2. Descript
Descript is a full text-based editor: you edit the transcript and the video follows. Its Create Clips tool, run by its AI co-editor Underlord, picks highlight moments for short-form, and you can then refine those clips with the same tools you use on the full episode: filler-word removal, Studio Sound, captions and layouts.
Who it's for: creators who edit the long version themselves and want clips from the same project, without paying for a second tool. Who it's not for: people who only want clips and don't want to learn an editor. A dedicated clipper is faster for that.
Watch out for: plans meter media hours and AI credits, and prices are per person.
Try Descript ↗3. Vizard
Vizard is a dedicated AI clipper like OpusClip. It finds highlights, auto-reframes, adds subtitles, AI emojis and B-roll, and schedules posts to your social accounts. It also has an API.
Who it's for: high-volume clippers and small teams on a budget. On yearly billing, Creator works out to $174 a year, and paid plans manage 6 social accounts (Creator) or 20 (Business). Who it's not for: anyone who needs to test the full output for free at high quality: the free plan exports at 720p and keeps files for 3 days.

How to get better clips from any of these tools
- Start with clean audio. Transcription drives everything, from moment detection to captions. A decent microphone matters more than the tool.
- Feed it structured content. Interviews, Q&As and talks with clear questions and answers produce more self-contained clips than rambling streams.
- Review every caption. Names, product terms and jargon are where auto-captions slip. Fix them before posting.
- Treat scores as a shortlist. Virality-style scores help you sort, but your audience data is the real test. Post several and see what holds viewers.
- Keep a hook in the first seconds. Trim the start of each clip so it opens on the strongest line.
What about AI video generators?
If you don't have long footage and need to create video, a clipper won't help. Look at generators instead. Runway and Kling AI lead our Image & video ranking. For voiceovers to go with your clips, see our best AI voice generators guide.
Our verdict
OpusClip is our pick for most creators who record spoken-word video and want shorts fast. Descript is the better buy if you already edit the full episode yourself, because the clips come from the same project. Vizard is the value pick for high volume and multi-account scheduling.

OpusClip vs Vizard: which is cheaper?

Usually some of them. These tools are good at finding self-contained, quotable moments in talking videos. Expect to review every clip, fix captions on names and jargon, and discard a share of the output.
Does the OpusClip affiliate link affect the ranking?
No. OpusClip is an affiliate partner and its links are labeled, but the order comes only from our scores. Affiliate status is not an input to any score.
